This year, ten personal AI agents launched from companies including OpenAI (Dots), Meta (Muse), Google (Gemini Spark), xAI (Grok Bot), Manus (Cue), and Perplexity, alongside startups like Instinct, Hark, and Poke, and the open-source Hermes Agent. They all do the same thing: your customer tells their agent what they want, and the agent goes and gets it. It books, buys, compares, negotiates, and messages on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the uncomfortable bit for a small business. Your website was built for a human. The agent doesn’t care about your hero banner, your testimonials carousel or your “Book a demo” button. It wants to know three things: what can I do here, am I allowed, and how do I do it in one step. If your site can’t answer, the agent moves on to a competitor whose site can, and your customer never even sees you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big platforms are already choosing sides. Shopify now lets agents complete checkout through three simple tools, with the buyer approving the order. Amazon is blocking them and went to court to stop Perplexity’s shopping agent. Meta, Sierra, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart are writing a Personal Agent Protocol so businesses can recognise a customer’s agent, know who it works for, and decide what it’s allowed to do. Payments are moving too, from one-time card numbers to agent wallets and stablecoin micro-payments like Coinbase’s x402.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
